Why Red Maca?

Maca is a plant from the broccoli family. ‘Maca root’ refers to the root of the plant, which resembles a cross between a turnip and a big radish. Maca is divided into categories based on the color of the root, which can be red, black, pink or yellow.

So why use red maca? Red maca is the second rarest of all varieties of maca, making up about 25% of the annual harvest. It grows in the same regions and under similar conditions as other more common types of maca, but it does have some unique properties, such as containing somewhat higher levels of pythonutrients including alkaloids, tannins, saponis and steroids.

This adaptogen has been used all over the world and affects both men and women. It’s believed to help balance hormones and boost adrenal and thyroid function. Maca also helps protect the brain from damage, improves cognitive ability in healthy people and improves bone health. It’s also believed to lift energy…not to mention libido!

Rhubarb

Rhubarb is as interestingly shaped as its name sounds. It belongs to the Polygonaceae family of plants and is widely considered as a vegetable, except in America, where it is considered a fruit.

Some of the health benefits that stood out to me, while creating this smoothie, is its ability to aid in improving digestion, increasing your metabolism and skin health, improving circulation and helping to prevent various ailments. With digestion being a staple focus of the Beauty Detox lifestyle, rhubarb fits right in.

The other great thing about rhubarb is that it’s cultivated throughout the year (widely available in almost any season), which makes it an easy ingredient to add to this recipe whenever you need the extra boost.

Serves: 1 10 ounce serving
Ingredients
  • 1 stalk fresh rhubarb, leaves removed, stems chopped in 1 inch chunks *SEE NOTES
  • ½ pint fresh strawberries, stems removed
  • 8 ounces coconut water
  • 1 tablespoon red maca powder (can substitute regular maca if red maca is unavailable)
  • ½ teaspoon bee pollen (optional)
Instructions
  1. Add the coconut water, rhubarb, strawberries, coconut water, and red maca powder to the blender. Starting the blender on a low speed, blend until smooth. If needed gradually increase to higher speeds and blend until smooth.
  2. Enjoy with a sprinkle of bee pollen on top if desired!
  3. NOTES: Rhubarb leaves are poisonous, be sure to remove all leaf matter before blending stalks!

Note On Recipe: Due to rhubarb’s potent nature, avoid if you have a pre-existing kidney condition or certain gastrointestinal conditions, as it can exacerbate them. If you grow the plant yourself, be careful that children or pets do not eat the rhubarb leaves, as they contain toxic levels of oxalic acid contained in the leaves.
