I love ginger for its detox properties, and frequently use it in my Immunity Tea. Simply slice it thinly, and steep it in boiling water for a few minutes. Ginger is one of the best all around health and beauty foods.

Ginger is very versatile, so you can use it in dozens of dishes, including my smoothies!

It not only helps promote detoxification, but elevates metabolism and immunity. Ginger is also warming without being irritating. It provides an earthy, fresh flavor. Here’s how to choose your fresh ginger and some other helpful kitchen tips!

The Drupe Fruit: Nectarines

Nectarines are one of those juicy, fragrant and deliciously sweet species that is closely related to the peach. These fruits are described as a drupe (I LOVE this word- it’s my new fav! It means fruit that’s flesh is surrounded by central solitary, hard seed).

It belongs within the genus Prunus, which is a large group of tree fruits, such as plums, damson, and almonds.

Nectarines contain B-complex vitamins and minerals and are good sources of niacin, pantothenic acid, thiamin, and pyridoxine. They also contain minerals and electrolytes, like potassium. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that help regulate heart rate and blood pressure. They also have iron (required for red blood cell formation), zinc, copper and phosphorus.

When To Buy & What To Look For

Nectarines usually last until the end of September, which means this is a great time to add it to your diet. You can use frozen nectarine during the rest of the year.

Try to look for well-ripened, soft fruit with a smooth surface and avoid hard, immature ones as they are harvested prematurely. Also, avoid ones with signs of surface blemishes, shriveled (never a good look), and any punctures.

If you find ones that are slightly hard but mature, you can keep them at room temperature until they ripen.

The ripening process can be enhanced storing them in a paper bag, which concentrates the gas and hastens the ripening process. Keep your ripe nectarines inside the refrigerator and try to use them up within a day or two, to enjoy their rich natural flavor.

Warming Ginger Nectarine Smoothie Recipe
Recipe type: Smoothie
Serves: 1 smoothie
  • Add 1 cup water
  • Then 1 nectarine
  • 1-2" chunk fresh ginger, grated or finely chopped
  • Next, add 1 ripe banana
  • 1 tsp. maca powder
  • 1 Tbs. coconut nectar (optional, to taste)
  1. Blend all ingredients together until smooth in a high speed blender and Enjoy!
